One night in , Michelle Myers—an Arizona mom with a history of migraines —went to sleep with a splitting headache. When she awoke, her speech was marked with what sounded like an British accent , despite having never left the U. Myers is one of about people worldwide who have been diagnosed with Foreign Accent Syndrome FAS , a condition in which people spontaneously speak with a non-native accent. In most cases, FAS occurs following a head injury or stroke that damages parts of the brain associated with speech.

In the past few days, a great deal of media attention has been paid to Leanne Rowe , a Tasmanian woman who has lived eight years with a French accent she acquired after a car accident. This phenomenon is known as foreign accent syndrome , a rare disorder that usually arises after brain damage as a result of, for example, stroke or head injury. Foreign accent syndrome has always been the source of much media interest and the stories often sound sensational. There has been, for example, an American who spoke with a British accent , a British Yorkshireman with an Irish accent and another British man with a Russian accent. More spectacular are tales of people waking from strokes or comas speaking fluently in languages they hardly knew before. While there is no scientific verification of cases of speaking a new language, speaking with a foreign accent is well documented, as shown in the video below. This is not just an English phenomenon - one of the first cases was of a Norwegian woman who suffered brain damage as the result of being hit by bomb shrapnel during an air raid in World War II.

Hey everyone! I have some great news… first off, earlier in the year a young lady who contacted me via Twitter, then email and eventually interviewed me, wrote a research paper for class and blogged about Foreign Accent Syndrome. I will attach the link to it since it was so good. Then this evening I had a cousin message me that a big college professor is fascinated and may be using some of my materials for his class! This is encouraging as so many more people are helped when more educators teach the truth and press for further research and proper diagnosis and treatment.
