The United States Armed Forces which consists of men and women fighting and defending the country does so because of patriotism mainly related to the constitution of the land. The constitution, which is a year old document, has provisions in it that clearly characterize the kind of armed forces that this country should have. The armed forces have a role in this because they are expected to secure the country and its people from external threats that may come from other countries or other hostile forces that do not originate from the United States. An example of this external threat is terrorism. This means that a singular militia has to be established which will take charge of defending the United States and all that is under and within it.

The national government was comprised of a single legislature, the Congress of the Confederation; there was no president or judicial branch. The Articles of Confederation gave Congress the power to govern foreign affairs, conduct war and regulate currency; however, in reality these powers were sharply limited because Congress had no authority to enforce its requests to the states for money or troops. Soon after America won its independence from Great Britain with its victory in the American Revolution , it became increasingly evident that the young republic needed a stronger central government in order to remain stable.
