Heterogeneous Grouping in the Classroom

Teachers must find a way to make science appealing to everyone, and multicultural education is one way to facilitate communication in all subjects between students, their teachers, and the rest of society. Understanding multiple learning styles allows one to focus on individual students' own learning styles; sub-groups within a classroom community; and the class as a learning community. Using this device, students can reflect on such concepts as "the dominant culture" and its influence; on the existence of "minority cultures" within a larger culture; on similarities and clashes among cultures; and on the necessity to use multiple learning methods to achieve an understanding of complex problems. Students need to know that someone believes in them and, sometimes, their teacher is the only person that really does.

Heterogeneous or nongraded education is the practice of teaching children of different ages and ability levels together in the same classroom, without dividing them or the curriculum into steps labelled by "grade" designations.
